The Birmingham Colmore Business District was buzzing with excitement on Tuesday 9th June as part of Church Street and Barwick Street were transformed into a post-apocalyptic set for the Warner Bros. Pictures movie She Who Brings Gifts.
This particular section of the movie is set in the London Borough of Camden, thanks to two very convincing looking road signs so the uninformed will have no idea that the scene was made in Birmingham. The movie is due to complete shooting in July having used location in and around the West Midlands area, including locations in Dudley, Cannock, Oxford and Stoke-on-Trent.
As regular followers of this site will already know, Birmingham has seen some stars on it’s streets over the years but Glenn Close is certainly right up there as one of the biggest names yet. Joined by Bond girl, Gemma Arterton, Paddy Considine, Fisayo Akinade and the young and local newcomer, Sennia Nanua, the Hollywood star walked the street littered with abandoned cars and overgrown shrubbery while zombie figures lurked on street corners and behind refuse trucks. It was an eerie set for a chilly summer afternoon, but it drew a large lunchtime crowd of onlookers as the cast ran through several rehearsals before numerous takes, captured by multiple cameras, including one on the roof of the former Birmingham and Midland Ear, Nose and Throat Hospital.
When asked for silence and no photographs during each take, the majority of the crowd were all very co-operative and watched the scene unfold on the streets they walk almost everyday, it was all very exciting, if not a little brief. By 3pm it was all over and by 5pm the set, which took two whole days to create, was pretty much cleared and the streets were back to normal.
As you would expect the local press covered the story in quite some detail, and there is a good photo gallery on the Birmingham Post site.
A few people did manage to grab a few photos as they watched the action, here are a few of the better ones;
